Note that when configuring the XServer try to select the actual card or a close
variant of the same. Here since you mentioned that your card is detected properly then
there is a configuration related problem. First when your card is detected a) Is the
corresponding RAM on the card detected as well b) Is it autodetecting the display
modes / resolutions available c) Have you selected exactly the same driver or a
substitute driver
Even I have faced a problem in X hanging but after some use and not at start. The
remedy for that is not yet clear as I changed the machine. Could also be possible due
to some hardware conflict or improper clock settings / Card selection
For the Samtron monitors i.e the most popular models there is already a selection
available in the monitors section else , select a custom monitor , a vertical range of
50-70 and an extended vga wherein an interleaved mode is chosen for 1024*768 to play
safe. Tales about linux video card/monitor configs toasting monitors is true but
nowadays monitors have some protection builtin wherein if you exceed the safe range
frequencies the monitor switches off for around 5-10 mins
