We don't call them flavors, we call them distributions. The reason being
that they are all derived from the same source code. Different flavours
(of UNIX?) are generally based on different sources and designed for
different systems.

If you want security, the best thing to do is read the security howto
first. Then modify whatever system you have to fix holes.
Instead of looking for BBS software, just install an internet news daemon,
and maybe a chat server. Then you would need a dial-in server and a dhcp
daemon I suppose if you have ppp. Or you could have all dial-up accounts
as shell only.
