Hi buddy,

since you are new to linux I would not recommed you to tweak the Kernel. Its better that you take the backup of your files are do a complete reinstallation so that the installation procedure guides you through all configurations.

If you need the CD of any distributions you may request the ILUG. People here are very generous to lend you the CD for couple of days or you may burn your personal copy for as low as 200 bucks.
