If you're new to linux, you shouldn't be recompiling your kernel straight
up. If you still want to do it, you should first read the kernel-HOWTO.
And I mean read it - completely - don't skip a thing.
You'll get it from: (ht|f)tp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/doc/howto/
Then read it again.
Then you'll know how to compile your kernel.
