Actually, it was they that asked me to make the changes and inform them
when it was done.

MX stands for Mail eXchanger. It is the server that takes care of the
mail for a domain. Therefore, even though you send mail to a particular
domain, its MX may be different and is the server that the mail will go
to. All mail systems need to know this so that they send mail to the
correct server.
