The weird button changes operating mode, that's why it is labelled "MODE".

You can play audio CD's in the drive by pressing the weird button (light
changes to orange), inserting the CD and then pressing the FF button to
start the playback. The music plays through the soundcard, as well as
through headphones connected to the front panel.
Neither do you need to run any program, nor is it dependent on whether
Win9x or Linux is running. In fact it plays even when no OS is running,
(only the machine should be powered on).
To go back to normal operation, press the Stop button, eject and remove
audio CD, press the weird button again (light changes to green).
