Eudora, I do not know, but I don't think MS is gonna give in to the
competition and release a linux version of OE. It's upto one of us to
clone it. I'd like to do that as soon as I get the time.

The purpose of IMAP is to allow you to keep all your mail on the server at
all times, and always work on that copy. Pine does not do POP, you'd use
something like fetchmail for that (which is what you should be doing
anyway (KISS philosophy)). Pine writes to sendmail -bs by default (again
KISS) but allows you to set an alternate outgoing mail program (which is
what I use to allow me to interface my local pine with my student's shell
account.

Downloading and "storing" mail offline is not the job of a MUA, it's the
job of a MTA and MDA. Reading mails offline or online is the job of the
user :)

That's the wrong attitude. Don't just not use OE because it is an MS
product (I must admit, that as much as I hate MS, OE is a good product,
and frankly, I'd say the only good MS product). I used Eudora once, but
figured I could write a better mail downloader myself - so I did.
Netscape messenger isn't a very cool MUA. It's one of the worse off.
Personally, I prefer Pine and Mutt - though on occassion, I write directly
to sendmail -t or even better - telnet localhost 25
