The fonts are not that bad. The fact is that the default fonts you get
with a standard linux distro are the bare requirements. You could install
more fonts if you want. Under Windows, you or some program you install
will install additional fonts.
Furthermore, most web designers design their pages with Windows users in
mind. If you read through the source, you'll find a lot of
<font face="Arial" size=3> all over the place. There is no Arial font in
X, so the closest (Helvetica) is used. Unfortunately, size 3 of Helvetica
is too small.
Also, many of the linux fonts do not have uniform scaling (some
intermediate scales are not anti aliased). This is the same problem that
certain non-TTFs under windows (MS Sans Serif for ex) have.
If you move some of your TTFs to linux, you might get some improvement.
