Ok guys ,
Its been quite some time and I'm breaking the silence ..
Been quite busy lately ..
Ok . to clarify regarding the problems on the Mailing list and what exactly
is happening
a) The mailing list software which is smartlist has an interface to sendmail
. Smartlist is entirely running on procmail based scripts . Now there are
several limitations on the webserver end and how much we can administrate
The smartlist level is ok to administrate and there is a web based
administration screen which is good however there lies no control on the
sendmail level . Also the problems that we have been facing recently are all
at the system level which we have no control / access too and I can check
only the smartlist level which appears ok . The mails coming out of
sequence could be attributed to the routes taken by the mails from this
server ( Note that this server hosts close to 4000 domains .. yep that's
true , at least what I've heard and at any time there are 100-200 messages
in the queue . Plus if any relaying rules are in place in the O.S level I
would not know this .
b) We have crossed the magical number of 200 , yep now we have 200 + members
on the ML and after considering all the factors the ML will be shifted . The
first pilot testing will be done on this sunday .
People will be informed when the switch will be taking place and things like
confirmed subscription are all part of the majordomo software which will
make it easy to administer. Also if there are any suggestions regarding the
mailing list please speak out before we switch . ( have the subject as
"Mailing list suggestion" ) so as to clearly distinguish .
If its specific please send it to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The majordomo configuration has been completed and some teething last minute
problems have to be weeded out .
The plan is to test it for a week with all the members and then close the
old list ..
Next on line is the web site which as Sagar had mentioned in one of its
older posts has to be changed which is next
Sagar you could consider redesigning the First message ( aka the netiquette
one ) for the ML
c) this mailing list is not yet moderated and will not be too in the future
unless explicitly requested as I fell the ML members are self
disciplined
Lately the ML is having its share of fun with all the posts ....
I heared of an incident where a microsoft spy got onto a linux ML and just
for the sake of it started pricking the feelings of the members .. We should
not take this seriously and it does not necessarily have to get
argumentative .
Vulcan , this list is for technical discussions of topics on LINUX and not
for arguing whose spelling is better or the likes .
No hard feelings but don't tell me that I didn't warn you ..... as some
members have demanded that you be disbanded from this list .
I hope when the dust clears and the cacophony is gone the ML will be back in
its old form with technical queries ... ;-)
Sorry for this long post as this was required .....
Later with majordomo
Regards
Sandesh
