dvd copying and playing is user space. Nothing to do with the kernel 
as long as you have iso9660 and udf fs (for rewritable cd /dvd) 
support. While copying with k3b specify ignore read errors. A player 
will play the cd cause it is very tolerant to bit errors. However 
copying is not. You might want to install libdvdcss2.
