Actually, I understood the joke, but the fact is that Gentoo does run 
fine on such low end machines. It is quite ok to install using the 
binaries provided with the newest release, because they're compiled for 
i686. The only problem would be compiling the software. This can be 
done away with if one is ready to upgrade the software only when a new 
version of Gentoo is released. But Gentoo has no proper release 
schedule that I know of.

Anyway, the workaround is to compile packages for i686 on a faster 
system, make binaries and install them on the slow machine.
