tasksel is a program run from shell once base installation is 
complete. if u select linux26 at the bootpromt at the beginning of 
install, installer will run it automagically for u after base 
installation.

That will give u various base install options. Not package selection 
after base installation. u can reconfigure the base installaion by 
running base-config.

Yes it will. U can  also use dselect or aptitude for an ncurses based 
package selection. Or kpackage manager or synaptic for a gui package 
installer. U can use alien to install rpms on a debian system or to 
convert rpms to debs.WARNING make sure that dependencies are met. U 
can occasionally mangle your system.
The above are sort of parsers for dpkg, which is the supreme core  
which will allow u to mangle your debian system in whatever way u 
please.
