You might need the binary codec packages from
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html to play some of the
proprietary formats.
I have installed win32 codecs in /usr/lib/codecs as well as
/usr/lib/win32. I also installed gstreamer plugins. In kaffeine I had
even pointed xine to both these directories.
