One thing I can tell you is that accounting is easier in bridge mode,
since PPPoE logs the exact number of bytes sent and received in
/var/log/messages (or a similar file). For example, I had a crude
script which used to do quite well (for most cases) here:

But in the router mode, I can't do accounting easily. vnstat seems to
be a good option, but I never seem to be able to match MTNL's stats.
