The K/Ubuntu live CDs have a memory test option. Clean your RAM contacts 
with a *pencil* eraser. Don't use an ink eraser or else the gold plating 
will get rubbed out. Press the RAM in again with a perfect 'click' at 
both ends.

BTW, it does not matter if the hard disk is present or not in a CD boot, 
till you actually begin the installation to the disk. If live boot fails 
only in a particular system, it can be due to the motherboard not being 
GNU friendly.
