I can see that Alsa 1.0.17 is available in the upcoming release 8.10 
Intrepid Ibex. In fact am using that version in my system and if am not 
wrong, the same should be available with Kubuntu 8.10 as well, which 
means it should be in the Kubuntu repository for 8.10 release (which is 
in Beta/RC stage now). Was the document you point referring to Kubuntu 
8.10 or 8.04? Sorry my connection is quite flaky that am not able to 
check that document myself.
