i am not sure if this is the only method but it
certainly works works for programs installed from
tarred files..

1. Go into the directory where u downloaded or
untarred the program

2. type 
$ make clean

3 next type 
$ make distclean

4 lastly
go to the parent directory of the program and type 
$ rm -rf <directory name>

do the last step only if u want to remove the entire
program from ur computer. of course u might still have
the .tar.gz file on ur computer.
