This simply means that you haven't specified the correct root partition. Since all the 
consoles live in /dev, which in turn lives in /, if you don't specify the proper root 
partition, /dev/ttyx can't be opened. Same is the case with init.

Just add the correct root=/dev/hd<xy> line in lilo.conf (and don't forget to run 
/sbin/lilo).
