When you enter rescue mode, none of your partitions is mounted. Nor are there any disk
devices configured. Depending on your version and distro, the rescue mode might try to
detect a Linux partition and mount it. You'll be told if that happens.

Assuming that it doesn't, you'll have to make a device for your hard disk [eg. 1 IDE
HDD with root as the 1st partition]:

# mknod /dev/hda

Create a dir to mount your root partition

# mkdir /myroot

Mount the root partition on to the new dir

# mount -t ext[2|3] /dev/hda1 /myroot

Now you have to map the root to the new dir you created so do:

# chroot /myroot

edit /myroot/etc/lilo.conf and run /myroot/sbin/lilo afterwards.
