[SNIP] The best command for detecting modem and its string is wvdialconf this detects the port on which modem is connected and the string that it takes. it writes into the given conf file. You can edit that conf file and then use wvdial to dial thru modem. Rest if you can give the error that it gives , then specific help may be provided.
