Hi,
There is one method I know...You need to have your installation CDs or boot
disk
And this works for RedHat, others I dont know..
Boot with the first CD.
when the linux prompt comes, choose/type "linux rescue" and press enter
you will get rescue prompt.
give these commands
cd /mnt/sysimage
chroot /mnt/sysimage
vi /etc/passwd

you can locate the line where "root" is present. you cannot see the password
there as its a encrypted string. just remove that string and make that field
blank.
save the file and exit vi
type reboot/exit to come reboot.

now remove dc and you should be able to log in as root without password.
dont forget to change it now...
