doesn't it require one more parameter? seems kernel version param is

   root (hd0,0)
   kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-27.7.x ro root=/dev/hda3
   initrd /initrd-2.4.18-27.7.x.img
try bootin in the new kernel after removing initrd entry from grub.conf 
for the new kernel.
