A back actor on the LAN can easily spoof your unicast GM soruce
address, so using unicast is does not mitigate that security risk.

True. This was more about 'accidental' failure, rather than malicious intend.

It would be more development work to actively avoid multicast. It would not
be impossible, but for me there would need to be a strong motivation
to justify the effort.

Perhaps that time is better spend on implementing PTP V2.1 (IEEE 1588–2019) Annex P in due time? ;-)
