| Has anyone had any luck installing Freebsd on our
| laptops? After selecting an option from the boot menu
| (ie. Default, NO ACPI, Safemode) from the install cd
| the laptop just turns off. This happened with 5.4 and
| is still the case with 6.0. Is there something
| specific I have to do to even get it to boot to the
| installer?

I haven't tried FreeBSD, but I was reading the release notes for 6.0
  http://www.freebsd.org/releases/6.0R/relnotes-i386.html#NEW
and found this interesting item:

The atkbd(4) driver now supports a 0x8 (bit 3) flag to disable
testing the keyboard port during the device probe as this can cause
hangs on some machines, specifically Compaq R3000Z series amd64
  laptops.

So somebody in the FreeBSD community cares about our notebooks.
Perhaps you can track down who by looking in the CVS logs of atkbd.
