Yes, it is much quieter these days because few people have problems now!

How much does it not work? Could you tell if it was a USB problem or a
thumbdrive problem? lsusb would tell you if it is a general usb
problem. I have only encountered USB problems on the Pavilion zv6000
(the zv5000 is identical model as the r3000 and the zv6000 is very
similar to the zv5000) and that was only a USB 2.0 problem.

That really makes me think that the usb is just weird, but see if you
are able to figure out anything with lsusb.
