OK, then let's move on to the card settings. Using an application such as kmix (I am running KDE at the moment), what settings do you see for your card? I am not sure what all these do, but here is what I see for mine (under kmix):

Current mixer: NVidia nForce3 (be careful because the modem is considered as a second sound card).

OUTPUT:
All (green) lights on. You may adjust the volume(s) here.

INPUT:
Line: Green
CD: Green
Mic: Red
Phone: None (both off)
Aux: Green
Capture: Red

Switches:
Headphone Jack Sense, Line Jack Sense, Mic Boost (+20 db): All three on (yellow; you may not need the mic boost).

Try setting up the card right first. Then, if that does not solve your problem, check your modules. Are you running 32 bits or 64 bits? I am running 64 bits, also SuSE 10, kernel 2.6.14.

Also, for your reference, here is my /etc/modprobe.conf.local file:
---------------
# /etc/modprobe.conf.local
# please add local extensions to this file
#
options nvidia NVreg_Mobile=1
options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPSBA=1
options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1

# This sets up the ALSA and OSS portion
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore

# Replace "driver" with the driver for you soundcard
alias snd-card-0 snd_intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

# The modem counts as second sound card
alias snd-card-1 snd_intel8x0m
alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1

# Configure the OSS emulation layer
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/dsp0 snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/dsp1 snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/dsp-1 snd-pcm-oss

# For modem, which is card 1
alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss

# If you have more than 1 card, set this number to the correct value
# The modem is considered a second sound card
options snd cards_limit=2
options snd-pcm-oss nonblock_open=1

alias wlan0 driverloader
/etc/modprobe.conf.local lines 14-46/46 (END)
-------------------------------------------------------

You do not need all these devices for OSS emulation. I am using them because I am experimenting with sound mixing, which is a royal pain in 64 bits; ALSA does not seem to handle sound output from 32-bit applications very well.

Let us know if the above is of any help.

PS. Be very careful with the mixing settings of your card! I got things running under the arts sound server; I used skype while at the same time playing MP3s on amarok. One of the mixing lights was on; the other party was able to hear my music via skype!!!!!!! With the mixer on, I was able to record the conversation (both parties) by running 'artsdsp qarecord' (I had to use artsdsp because qarecord seems to want to monopolize the sound card). Those settings (at least under kmix) seem to act as a state machine. To make sure you don't get into a situation like the one I described, make sure that the mixer lights are off AND that the red mic light is on! If the green (top) mic input light is on, the output of the mike is also routed to the speakers.

Hi,
I have this problem with both internal and external speakers. Yes I hear
this same dinging from the built-in speakers. The dinging pitch actually
changes each time it happens, so its not always the same noise. It seems
to me as if its freezing on the first note of the mp3.

I also tried the .asoundrc, it didn't do anything.

Thanks
Which speakers are you referring to? External speakers? The computer's
built-in speakers? Do you hear the same "dinging" from the computer's
built-in speakers with nothing else connected to the sound card?

Did you install the .asoundrc file the wiki page recommends?

Hi,

I am using SuSe Linux 10 and the I have an issue with sound on my
computer. Every time I turn on my speakers, all I hear is constant
dinging. No other noises are heard in the back ground. If I restart my
computer, it stops, but as soon as I try to play something the dinging
starts again. Can you help me with this?

Thanks,
