That's why I don't use drum notation maps. Most of my equipment also recognizes note duration, and not only kicks the drum (gates, pitch modulation...) And I guess, it doesn't matter if I move this from drum synthies to samplers. Also the sampler makes a difference in sound (if the sample's aware of this), whether I send C4, velocity 80, quarter note or Eb3, velocity 103, full note. Both may be kick drums, one a kick, the other a snare...It's not necessary to draw this midi event in a notation editor, when I play it more like a real instrument...
And to totally screw it up: I use the notation editor of Rosegarden to control a filter bank. This cutie counts quarter notes and opens filters or adds distortion of velocity amount... To summarize this: Notation editors rely on maps, C4->Midievent(pitch=C4, velocity=80, duration=Quarter). Therefore you need to define maps. With a simple piano roll or more complex notation editor you don't need maps=time saving. (But there's a need of knowing your equipment, resp. sample material.)
