The quality of those samples for the purpose of making virtual
instruments is not too good, so it is probably not worth the pain.
They were meant for other purposes than samplers (sound analysis).

IIRC there are some soundfonts around, check www.sf2midi.com and
search for "Iowa" or "UoI".

I would recommend you to get some instruction in instrumentation or
orchestration before tackling this project, it will help you a lot.

A cello string can be scratched with a bow (arco) or plucked with the
fingers (pizz) to produce sound. There are other possibilities, but
these two are the most widely used.

Cello played with a bow (arco), very soft (pp), on the C string (sulC)
producing notes from C2 to B2.

A cello has four strings, and each of them has slightly different
sound timbre. As in most string instruments their ranges overlap. For
instance you can play a G2 with both the C and the G strings, that's
why the string is specified in the name of the file.
