patch was helpful.
The behaviour difference in this case was that gtk3 is a bit more aggressive
about triggering implied repaint events on its own, whereas gtk2 handles this
more conservatively and assumes applications always to tell gtk when to
repaint. On the other hand, those implied repaint events are one of the
reasons why gtk3 feels bit more sluggish sometimes compared to gtk2, even on
very recent & decent hardware.
That makes sense. I think I prefer the gtk2 way though.
