I thought about posting a comment on the blog but its already a day
old and the author has already posted that he has been deleting
comments. When i read a story like this the authors credibility
quickly comes into play. Perhaps this Joe Wilcox is a would be Dvorak
and just says things to instigate debate and conversation. I can
respect that. Deleting comments I can not. If SPAM is really an issue
then get a better captcha for your blog.

I did read on digg that Google was alerted to a problem with the EULA
of Chrome and they promptly said they would correct it and make it
retroactive.

I'm not at all bothered by the data that Chrome collects.

First of all Chrome is BETA software. Google is completely within
their rights to monitor the usage of a product they develop. Its not
like users were forced to try it. Presumably the formal release will
not have these features. It might as Google tends to abuse this and
label everything as BETA.

Second, the source code was released. If I am really that concerned
about it I can look at the code. Granted, I probably would not
understand most of it. ;-) If Chrome was an MS product of course they
would be getting slammed for what Google just did. If MS didn't have
such a long history of frustrated users there might be an argument for
the authors swiss cheese story. Google on the other hand has a long
standing history of taking care of its users. If MS had released
Chrome they definitely would not have made the code available or put
the product under a well defined (accepted) license. Google used a BSD
license as I recall for Chrome.

Third privacy is not a cut and dry thing. Two things are almost always
combined with privacy (trust and respect). Of course MS got hammered
for XP having big brother features. MS does not respect its users (my
personal opinion) therefore there is no trust. MS just doesn't have
that personal touch. When Google messes up they apologize, generally
they correct the issue and we all move on.

Fourth and most importantly. All Google did was show us something
their working on. Hey here is a browser we developed check it out.

I find too many flaws with how the author presents his opinion to be
concerned with his actual opinion. Some people state opinions that are
based on too little information. Wilcox seems to have too much
information to get a clear point across.

BTW, The web site microsoft-watch.com (owned by eweek.com) is hosted
on Linux. I love it when MS fanboys use Linux to send their message.
He is a self described Windows bigot according to one of his own blog
postings. I know he has an apple blog as well so he has reached some
form of enlightenment.
