You aren't really being lied to. Each addition could technically have its own licensing, the features added to an enterprise edition like hotspots could be under a different license, and therefore they can change the entire license for the other version. If the community edition is licenses as GPL or whatever, you are still getting that. MySQL is FOSS, but they also have an enterprise edition with more features that isn't.
There is way too much focus on the FOSS part and not on the software itself as being a good product or not.
