Hi Craig,

Welcome to the list.  Glad to here you are a Linux user.  Before I
would attempt to answer the questions you have posed to the list, I
would need to know what you are trying to accomplish with LInux,
Desktop Replacement, Mac Like system, minimal system for old hardware
etc......  The reason I say that is some of those distributions are in
a way built with different ideas in mind.  For example, DSL is really
ment for minimal systems, old systems or as a live CD.  What kind of
hardware are you using?
