I am not sure about future versions. This "free as in beer" thing happened due to that Lame Duck Presidential Challenge, which can be easily googled for. Dunno if it was a marketing stunt or the guy really meant the challenge...
If your uses are generic, like regular office stuff and the likes, then yeah, you've got your regular Linux alternatives, but if you depend on software like Quicken/Quickbooks for accounting, or if you do gaming, or if you need IE6 for some website or the other, then it's either a VM with XP or using software like this, which really works great for a lot of stuff... The wine project is really amazing.
