I'm actually in the process of trying to install Splack (SPARC port of
Slackware) onto a Sun Ultra 5. Right now I'm stuck at the point of not
being able to boot from the install CD, but I suspect a mechanical
problem with the CD-ROM drive in this eBay-sourced unit as it makes
really ugly noises. (But it was $61 total with shipping, so I can't
complain.) Right now I'm 80 miles away from the machine, but next time
I come to that site, I'll have a new IDE CD-ROM drive with me (of a
PeeCee commodity variety) and that'll be the moment of truth: will it
work? (The Ultra 5 is new and PeeCee-like enough to use IDE instead of
SCSI, but it still remains to be proven experimentally whether a PeeCee
store brand drive will work or not.)

But this particular machine is already designated to become a server;
as for my girlfriend's desktop workstation, she wants a PC. Thinking
about it rationally, it'll be our web/audio/video station and I do
concede that a PeeCee would probably be the optimal hardware platform
for this particular application.
