A better analogy would be: I bought a hammer, but the company that sold it says

the only nails that I can hammer with it are nails that are supplied by that 
said same company
and the wood that the hammers are nailing into must also be supplied by the 
said same company,
Oh, and the hammers cannot be used by anyone unless the blue-print for the 
house is also supplied
 by the said same company.

I think it would be safe to say that is part of the reason apple has such a 
small share of the market.
I'm not criticizing apple. They can do whatever they want. It's a free 
market......... so far.
