I saw the Vyatta router stuff at SCALE, and I decided to do some research. I found this well-written blog post comparing Vyatta to Cisco.
http://mickgregg.blogspot.com/2007/05/is-there-floss-alternative-to-cisco.html I am now on the quest for just the right hardware to run a router on. I know Vyatta says you can get 400mb/s if you use PCI-Express ethernet cards. Honestly, I want something that fits in a 1U rack and doesn't need fans - so I might have to skip the PCI-express option. Do you know of any good 1U (or 2U) rack servers that run something like a 1.6Ghz Atom or similar CPU that can be run with a large heatsink or minimal fan - I really don't want to hear fan noise from this thing.
