I really want to test this on real hardware too.  In a VM that resides on a
OCZ vertex ssd, I am getting grub to boot in 16 seconds.  This is a fresh
install with ext4, no boot tweaks and is set to auto login.  Trying it with
ext3 as well I didn't see much boot speed difference.
