I finally got somewhere. This morning I installed 9.04, using the
Alternate install disk (so I could run software RAID). When done I
used Synaptic to install "kde-desktop" and also "KAlarm".

KAlarm now works properly from gnome. This is the same setup that
didn't work with 8.10, as someone else also mentioned.

The only problem left with it is that it doesn't start automatically
when I log into KDE; I need to figure out how to call it so it'll just
run in the background.

But even now, if once I login using Gnome I click on KAlarm, and then I
can close the window; it'll keep running and all the alarms will work
properly.

I had lunch today with Randall, and we discussed this and other issues;
we both believe that if I install the "kde" package that will install
everything. I'm going to try that now.

I'll let the list know.
