if you plug into a windows box, run PCInspector File Recovery (
pcinspector.de), it'll search for data through every sector. It's a free
program. If you use linux, then use a combination of ddrescue/photorec to
retrieve data. Not long ago Roger had a thread on this list where he was
recovering data for a friend. There's no need to go to a recovery company as
just the beginning of the disk was shredded.
