I've been using Linode since October 2008, and only recently have I experienced any problems. I have Pingdom uptime checks done every minute, and in the last 8 months I have only had 4 checks that failed (40 minutes total - 12/13/09, 10/27/09, 08/05/09, 06/22/09).
Three of them were 5 minutes and the other was 25. The 25 minute even was odd (it was a network issue if I remember correctly, system stayed up), but it happens to everyone and was certainly my first time experiencing anything serious with them. One of the 5 minute events was my system getting rebooted by something in their infrastructure that went wrong, but its rare, I had over 150 days of uptime at that point, it would have been more but the previous reboot was for system updates. Another 5 minute event was because I was doing system updates. If you count the 25 minute one thats still an average of 5 minutes a month for 8 months (99.99% uptime). You're in charge of your system so uptime with them is going to be more about how you do things than their infrastructure in my opinion. The problems I had were really a non-issue for me, because they happen, you can't guarantee they won't it just matters how often they happen. 5 minutes of downtime a month is the same as doing monthly system updates and rebooting. Beyond that, their admin interface is great, their support is great, I have tried a few other companies and managed physical servers and I would have to start experiencing issues on a more consistent basis before I would leave them. There was a recent benchmark someone did comparing Linode and Slicehost and I think one other and Linode came out on top, so unless you really need a custom hardware infrastructure you're probably better off with Linode. If I had the time I'd run my own shared hosting environment on top of their infrastructure.
