Don't listen to Roger. :-)

IMHO Both of them are going to have similar learning curve. In fact,
why don't you decide after SCALE? Ask people there. Funny enough,
these are the possible booths you ***may** find there:

1) a PostgreSQL booth with volunteers dedicated to make an awesome
database http://www.postgresql.org/

2) A MySQL booth paid by Oracle http://dev.mysql.com/ (scroll all the
way to the bottom and enjoy the Oracle logo)

3) A MariaDB booth - Monty's fork - which will probably will have all
the whining about wanting MySQL saved (of course, without having him
to return any of the millions he made with the original sale)
http://askmonty.org/wiki/index.php/MariaDB

4) A Drizzle booth https://launchpad.net/drizzle - IMHO the only 'good
guys' in this whole MySQL fiasco. Granted, it is a re-design of a lot
of the mysql components - done right. Brian Aker - the brains behind
this project - does amazing software (and presentations) and is a
super smart down-to-earth guy. Memcached and Gearman are some of the
projects where he has spent a lot of time.

Remember that the community (and thus the people) behind an open
source project is one of the most important things in this ecosystem.
We don't "speak with our dollars", we speak with community involvement
and software usage. Save a baby bit - pick PostgreSQL or Drizzle.
