Trevor, I am happy that Google has decided to simplify their privacy policy resulting in less words. It is also great that Google wants to make searching more predictable for each user based on prior internet activity. I can even appreciate that this sharing of personal information happens within Google controlled websites...etc.
What I do not like is that I cannot say no to this sharing of my information. I do not want Google to use what I do on the net to predict what shows up in my search results; if I want better results I will refine my search. I do not need Google to compare how often I look at "jaguar" the cat vs "Jaguar" the car and assume the more commonly searched is what should show up in my browser. If people want this feature, Google should feel free to turn this sharing of personal information on by default, as long as they let me turn it off at will. Ghostery is great, I have been using it for a while now, but I should not need it to protect myself from Google. Google should not be able to hold my Gmail/G+ hostage (on certain machines) until I click 'ok' on this required policy. I have received seven emails from Google telling me about this policy, all of which say: "We're getting rid of over 60 different privacy policies across Google and replacing them with one that's a lot shorter and easier to read. Our new policy covers multiple products and features, reflecting our desire to create one beautifully simple and intuitive experience across Google. We believe this stuff matters, so please take a few minutes to read our updated Privacy Policy and Terms of Service at http://www.google.com/policies. These changes will take effect on March 1, 2012." Yeeeeah.......no. The fact that the new policy is mandatory seems suspect, IMO. Chris...
