Have you tried the REISUB key combo

It wont fix the problem but it's safer than pulling the battery out
which if you do it too often could cause even more problems.

Get Ubuntu on a USB stick and try it out, I did a quick search for it
but the results were swamped with articles about
gOS being based on Ubuntu but if any distro has a chance it's Ubuntu,
it appears to have the best mix of hardware support and usability.
However you'll still have to do a lot of tweaking to get it to work
fully but at least you'll have the full Ubuntu repositories to work
with
and a much bigger community for support. You could also try Ubuntu-eee
http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/ even though its for different hardware it
might have some extra drivers you need installed by default, it
certainly helped with my AspireOne.
