Open source in general and Linux in particular has been endorsed by Green parties around the world. See: http://www.greenparty.ca/en/policy/visiongreen/partone#_Toc180047589 http://ubuntu-ca.org/node/11 http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/120280 http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/117245
The logic is that FOSS is based on sustainable development and that it keeps older hardware out of landfill sites because of the wide range of architectures it supports and the lower consumption of resources. http://ostatic.com/blog/double-your-computing-capacity-and-lower-your-carbon-footprint-for-earth-day As far as I know there are no studies, but every year Windows requires more RAM and each new version renders older hardware obsolete. Remember the Vista capable debacle which is still before the courts. I know lots of people who needed to buy new equipment from computers to printers just to run Vista. In any case, Green parties, starting with the Canadian one, have started to back FOSS and that is encouraging. Roy Linux: Fast, friendly, flexible and ... free!
