Open source in general and Linux in particular has been endorsed by Green

The logic is that FOSS is based on sustainable development and that it keeps
older hardware out of landfill sites because of the wide range of
architectures it supports and the lower consumption of resources.

As far as I know there are no studies, but every year Windows requires more
RAM and each new version renders older hardware obsolete. Remember the Vista
capable debacle which is still before the courts. I know lots of people who
needed to buy new equipment from computers to printers just to run Vista.

In any case, Green parties, starting with the Canadian one, have started to
back FOSS and that is encouraging.
