try to run puppy-linux ( http://www.puppylinux.org) on that laptop from cd, that usually runs with older software and once you get used to it, it's a fun little distro! but i suggest, as said above, try linux on a newer piece of hardware to learn and get behind it! on newer hardware and if you're willing to learn, you could try sidux (www.sidux.com),a debian.sid based distro,that uses some commandline- tools, but it has a well-documented manual in 12 languages and a nice help-channel on irc! hope, that helps and have fun with linux!
