Odd that Ubuntu is asking for a root password.   Did you set one or
does Ubuntu Ultimate Edition do things differently?

Regardless, one workaround would be to boot from the Ubuntu CD, start
a terminal, and then run 'sudo e2fsck -fy /dev/sda5'
