To create the bootable install on USB stick doesn't take much time at all, especially when compared to burning a CD. So, to create it and find out if it will work or not is that much of a time investment. On older machines the BIOS won't list usb as a boot option, but many work IF the flash drive is plugged in when the machine is turned on (and might require Plug and Play OS enabled in some older BIOSes).

It's an option well worth exploring... I've wasted time on older machines trying to burn install CDs, only to have them fail to work as boot disks... and then lo and behold, the flash drive solution worked in less time than it takes to burn 1 CD.

Down the page, that article offers a solution for older machines that won't boot off USB (USB 1.0 instead of 2.0 I believe is the real issue here). It claims to have a loader that works. Check it out!

But then, computers that old may not (and probably won't) be able to
boot from USB.

Yeah, I thought about that. *I don't have one lying around in the
immediate vicinity, but maybe this is the trick anyway.
I'm downloading Qimo right now. *Just for the h of it. *We'll see ...
     *wink*
I have no idea how much RAM are in these machines. *I assume 256, but I
was too lazy to check. *Could lack of memory cause the puking?
On both machines, it fails at the "installing software" stage. *Then,
one machine won't allow either grub or lilo to load. *
     Thanks,

Any chance you can put a DVD drive in from another computer to load
what you want? I had to do that with my home server, which is fine,
cause I never use the drive after I install.
