As far as the file sharing, if you are using samba, maybe just tweaking the
smb.conf file will fix the permissions problem.  have a look at:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/manpages-3/smb.conf.5.html  probably
'force create mode' or it's synonyms will help or are the problem if set
incorrectly now.
