Here are a few screeshots of Ubuntu Lucid running on a Dell Vostro
3500 (~$700) and an Asus EeePC 1005HAB netbook (~$200):

I love the Asus for its compactness and portability, but it is not
64-bit. The Dell works great as a portable desktop and is 64-bit.

Out of curiosity, why a 64-bit laptop? That is, what applications
will your friend be running that require 64-bit? Or is the plan to
install a 32-bit OS on it anyways?
